Change of direction

Have been noticing of late that despite getting a fair amount of organic matter back into the soil it's soon flattened by the rain and readily compacts.

Bee House

Solitary bees lay their eggs in the drilled holes, leave a deposit of pollen and then seal up the hole with mud. Next spring the young should hatch and it all starts again. Solitary bees aren't aggressive and are virtually stingless; they're quite a talking point and nice to have about.

Allium Leaf Miner

Our onions started to show signs of wriggly leaves. Within a few days it became apparent we'd been hit by the Allium Leaf Miner. Onions were full of maggots and pupae and rotting in the ground. In the end we took a total of 500 onions, garlic and shallots to the tip where commercial composting temperatures will destroy the pest.
